Formal Equality Masks Real Inequality
The Problem
Canada loves the idea of one person, one vote. It's a nice story. But formal equality at the ballot box hides a deep inequality in who actually has political power.
The Lobbying Gap
In 2023, the top 100 corporate lobbying organizations spent more on government relations than every grassroots advocacy group in the country combined. Bay Street gets face time with ministers. Regent Park doesn't. By the time you cast your ballot, the real decisions have already been shaped.
The Donor Class
Donations are technically capped in Canada. But the whole ecosystem of fundraising dinners, networking events, and party access creates a class of people whose influence goes way beyond their one ballot. A $1,650 donation to a leadership campaign buys more political access than a lifetime of showing up to vote.
Media Amplification
Who owns the editorial pages? Who gets invited to the panels? Whose concerns become "national issues" and whose get filed under "special interests"? Media concentration means some communities set the agenda while others get talked about but never talked to.
Network Effects
Generational wealth creates generational power. If your parents went to the same university as the deputy minister, if your family lawyer golfs with the riding association president, your voice carries further. Not because you're louder. Because the channels were already open before you were born.
It All Compounds
These advantages don't sit in neat little boxes. They stack. A wealthy, white, able-bodied man from an established family doesn't have one advantage. He has all of them, and they multiply. Meanwhile, a racialized, disabled, queer person from a low-income family faces compounding barriers that one ballot can't overcome.
The Ballot Is Not Enough
One person, one vote is a beautiful principle. But when the entire system around the vote tilts toward the already powerful, formal equality just maintains the status quo. The answer isn't to give up on democracy. It's to actually deliver on the promise.
